1. editing / post-production
|
Blurs are added in as an effect
like when recording with an old camera. A tint of colour correction
increasing the blue to show the effects better.
|
2. mise-en-scene
|
There are several things going on
in this music video such as the band being in the music video. The lead
singer alone in a bathroom shaving his head then going onto the stage with a
white balaclava. Then walking through the crowd. Also him at the end of the
video the lead singer falling off the stage backwoods.
|
3. content / peformance
|
The band play one on the drums and
then the lead singer. The lead singer has clippers and is shaving his head
while singing moving lyrics. The lead singer goes on stage with a balaclava
and walks through the middle of the crowd before the chorus hits.
|
4. camera shot/angles types
|
There are many camera angles used
such as long shots and establishing shots to show the place they are at.
|
5. narrative
|
I think the story behind this music
video has a deeper meaning than the title suggests. I think that the lead
singer Tyler is showing that he isn’t afraid of who he is this is shown when
he shaves his head.
|
6. conform / subvert / amplify
(tone of lyrics & music)
|
Amplify as the meaning behind the
story and the beat make it seem enhanced.

|
1. editing / post-production
|
Quick cuts are made with the base
drums. A slight colour correction is made to brighten the video to match the
song. Cuts are made also with the high pitch sound of the guitar. Towards the
end a dramatic colour change is made with all bright colours toned town as
the tempo of the music changes.
|
2. mise-en-scene
|
There is the band in this music
video playing guitars. There is also backup dancers but they are all female.
also props such as jenga, doors and
a bath tub to name a few.
|
3. content / peformance
|
The content involves the band
playing guitar and the lead singer lip singing at the same time. We walks
through a group of females doing different things such as bathing or playing
jenga. When it comes to the chorus the band is playing with there
guitars.
|
4. camera shot/angles types
|
There are many different angles of
shots medium angles low angles and side angle shots to name a few.
|
5. narrative
|
I think the story of this music
video is it’s trying to display the feeling that girls think as some of the
lyrics say ‘I can tell just what you want’ and ‘you don’t want to be alone’.
|
6. conform / subvert / amplify
(tone of lyrics & music)
|
This music video is defiantly
amplified as it is very upbeat and happy.
|
Notes From Practice Music Video;
- Make sure you don't go free hand use a peace of equipment to steady the camera
- Make sure the edit links well with the shots not dragging on to long.
- Make the narrative strong and clear.

Throne is more aggressive music
1) Music video demonstrates genre characteristics eg. Stage Performance, dance routine boy/girl.
In Bring Me The Horizon Throne there is not much stage presence as most of it is close ups or medium shots of the face and upper body. There are some action shots of the band playing there instruments or singing into the mike.
Compared to ed Sheerans Thinking Out Loud the stage presence is different as in the music video the whole stage is used and you can see there whole body. Where as in Throne the stage presence is confined to medium angle shots and a high sense of action in a confined space.

2) There is frequent reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, telescopes) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
In the music video Throne by Bring Me The Horizon there is no voyeuristic treatment of the female body as it is a dark music video displaying other meanings behind it. I think the reason for this is because of the genre of the song it is a heavy rock song so displaying women in a sexual way wouldn't fit the genre and lyrics of the song compared to something like Anaconda by Nicki Minaj.
The lyrics in that song are more suitable to the way the music video is shot and produced.

Test Footage
Here is a >link< for our test footage.
The footage in question is not perfect but now we have tested some things we can now improve on our techniques.
For the first clip we had issues such as focus and positioning, in order to fix this we have to make sure that the individual in the shot is in focus. Another problem was the positioning of the camera, it felt too still and quiet which suggests to us we should use alternatives such as a shoulder mount or even free hand.
For the second clip we decided to go free hand to see if the shot would have better positioning, we also made the actor walk to make the shot more entertaining and less awkward. If we had to improve this shot we would have made the lighting better with artificial lighting and also would have focused the camera better, we seriously struggled with the focus because the area was fairly dark.

These issues and problems will be part of our contingency and will not be repeated during the official production. The reason of this shoot was to identify problems which we can rectify at a later stage.
Legal & Ethical;
LEGAL
Issue
|
Solved or justified?
|
Drug Use
|
We want to
have drug use in our music video; the drugs used will just be antidepressants
and antipsychotics. Since these aren’t illegal drugs they shouldn’t be a
problem will the law. This does inflict on ethical issues, which will be
discussed below.
|
Copyright
|
Using the
music in our video will inflict copyright, to solve this we found the contact
details of the original artist which was the email address, we emailed them
asking for permission and a few days later they replied allowing us to use
it.
|
ETHICAL
Issue
|
Solved or justified?
|
Drug Use
|
The use of
drugs like antidepressants will inflict on ethical issues because of the
seriousness of the topic and that can offend people if we don’t take it
serious enough so we have to be careful. Also overdosing on drugs is a
serious issue because it can inflict suicide.
|
Mental
Illness
|
The
protagonist of our music video has schizophrenia and if we don’t take it
serious enough people can get offended or think that this is what all
schizophrenic people are like. So we need to be careful and possibly even
research why schizophrenic people are like. We also would like to amplify the
seriousness of mental illness; so raising awareness is a good thing.
|
Suicide
|
The climax
of our music video is the protagonist committing suicide by means of
overdosing on antidepressants and since this a very real topic we must take
it very seriously because if we don’t people will be offended by it and that
is the last thing we want our music video to do. We will also be able to
raise awareness of suicide by showing how serious of an issue it is.

Age
Rating for Our Music Video
We want out music video to be rated “PG” or parental
guidance, this restricts what we can have in our music video but with research
into other music videos we found that other music video easily follow what is
necessary to be PG rated.
For a music video to be PG rated it needs to have minimal
usage of any discrimination, drugs, imitable behaviour, bad language, nudity,
threat and violence. Our music video only includes drug use but they are things
like anti-depressants, no nudity, no discrimination, no bad language, no threat
and no violence is present in our music video. The protagonist isn’t portrayed
as being someone young child would want to imitate.

This is our first shot on our storyboard. When planning this shot on our storyboard we made it a long shot. The reason for this was because we wanted to get a sense of the background and what was around the lip singer. When filming the shot we changed up the camera angle. The reason for this was because in the studio we filmed in we where limited for space so we couldn't get all the way back and fully zoom out without changing the lighting and the position of the lip singer. Therefor we had to change the shot when filming.

We chose to shoot three different camera angles of the full lip sync. The reason for this was to get a different angles and perspectives of the whole lip sync so we had a choice on what camera angle we used in our edit for different verses and choruses.

When planning for this shot on our storyboard we made it so the shot would be captured as a long shot. The reason we changed the shot up when filming was because we felt it wouldn't fit the setting and the surrounding scenery. We did attempt a long shot but it was hard to get both the mirror and actor in the same shot with limited space around the production team.
3) did you follow safe working practices? How?
PreProduction;
Post-production;
When at the computer we used premier as our editing soft were. Putting our footage in folders we renamed them. Throughout editing we had regular screen breaks every 20-30 minutes. We also made sure no food and drink was near the computers and keeping our work are clear. Although in the screen breaks we made sure to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated when working also going for short walks outside to move our whole body so no joints cramp or hurt.
At the computer we made sure to be at least 50cm away from our screen. When sitting on the desk chair we kept our posture up right with our back straight. Keeping the computer screen 10 to 20 degrease slanted so it reliefs any neck pain when looking at the screen. The adjustable back rest helped us to keep our posture up right and the keyboard being at elbow hight helped us to easily type without getting strain in our arms.
Lastly we always kept the seat high perfect so our thigh where parallel to the floor and the balls of our feet where flat on the floor.
5) what genre did you decide on and what genre conventions did you use?
Our genre is indie / rock. It was vital to us to use a hybrid of genres because it makes the song sound less generic and more unique. It is also quite convenient that our group has a the same taste in music. In terms of conventions we used we had the protagonist going through his everyday life but things don't go as planed. This is what makes the visuals unique, its due to it being the unexpected. The lip syncing in the studio is also a genre convention because lots of other indie songs do the same thing in their videos. Lip syncing is also an imperative part to our production.

Me and my group checking the shot where ok;
We knew the equipment was working because before using the equipment we checked the sd card was clear of any footage so we had the maximum amount of space to take as many shots as we liked. We also checked the battery power so we could use the camera for long periods of time. We set the camera to battery saver mode so if it wasn't used after 20 seconds it would go onto standby to save battery.

2) Did you follow the script/storyboard? how yes/no
Before producing the script we brainstormed our ideas and thought of a main concept/ idea to follow. Then planning out a rough plot after that we produced our draft script. Then from developing that we produced our storyboard. When making the storyboard we made sure it was detailed with relevant camera shots and mise en scene. Then with the storyboard we added colour to make our drawings more detailed.
This is our first shot on our storyboard. When planning this shot on our storyboard we made it a long shot. We did attempt a long shot but it was hard to get both the mirror and actor in the same shot with limited space around the production team.
3) did you follow safe working practices? How?
PreProduction;
We followed safe working practises by regulating how much time we spent filming. Actors were not given a high workload, we had regular breaks so we could discuss different things that could improve our production.
We also followed safe working practises by not putting members of public (and anyone involved with the production) at risk. For example there was a scene where sam had to ride a bike into the road. Before we shot the scene we made sure that there was no members of the public in the way. We did this because the location is public property so we have to be vigilant.
When at the computer we used premier as our editing soft were. Putting our footage in folders we renamed them. Throughout editing we had regular screen breaks every 20-30 minutes. We also made sure no food and drink was near the computers and keeping our work are clear. Lastly we always kept the seat high perfect so our thigh where parallel to the floor and the balls of our feet where flat on the floor.
4) Did you follow the production process
We split work the work evenly throughout the project. We first brainstormed our ideas in a group then developing it from there we chose an idea and developed it more. Then two people worked on the script while another two did recce sheets. Once the script was complete we all worked on a page of the storyboard writing. Then we drew in the detailed images.
When filming we did several re shoots as one day the weather wasn't brilliant so we changed round our filming for the day it was raining we would shoot all the shots inside and when the weather was nicer we would film outside to get our shots.
We followed the production process that refers back to our production schedule. Firstly we had to find a song which all of our group felt comfortable doing. After that we suggested our ideas on story line and we collectively decided on what idea would be the best to expand based on the songs lyrics.
We then put together a treatment, all of us had input into making this treatment and we all had to pitch these ideas to the class for constructive feedback. Story board was the next thing to make, sam created a draft so we could then give feedback as to what he should do differently.
After this our group spit up different paper work tasks which where vital to our production process. This paperwork consisted of; Risk assessments, recees, release forms, legal and ethical, certification from artist, location permission.
Between these tasks we did a test shoot which pointed us in the right direction in terms of who is going to do what and getting comfortable with our roles. After the paper work we booked out equipment ready for when our location was available. Our group always turned up on time ready to shoot when we agreed days in advance. Our group was really competent when it came down to suggesting changes and helping actors. For example I had to give Jeff a heads up on what lyrics he was singing next. We also had a decent contingency plan if locations where unavailable. For example we booked the studio twice in case some footage was inadequate or a group member wanted something done again.
In terms of what we could have improved during this production, we could have had a better contingency plan if we didn't have enough scenes/ footage. This is what our group struggled with. We needed another scene to fill in another minute and we sort of did it on the spot without major planing. To fix this in the future we need to about how long a scene lasts and how many scenes will make up the entirety of the song.

UNIT 46 AUDIO-VISUAL PROMOS
EDIT SHEET
Review of footage:
Overall I thought my edit went well. The reason for this was because most of the camera shots where still and in focus. There was never too many of one shot it changed all the time from close up to long shots. The sequence I am most pleased with is 00:00 to 01:00, the reason for this is because the lip sync to start of the music video matched up with the music perfectly and the colour correction used on this part along with the focus and camera angle worked for a really good opening to the music video. Along with the narrative at the start with the shots slowly tracking out making it obvious where the main actor was and the colour correction on those shots made for a intriguing opening séance.
Several things went well in our music video like the camera shots taken. I think the thing that went the best was everything about the lip sync. The reason for this is because the camera angles taken where different as we had one close up of the hole lip sync one medium shot of the whole lip sync and a long shot of the whole lip sync. Also the fact the actor knew the song very well and managed to match the lip sync, along with the lighting and camera work I feel that was it was a really strong section of my music video.
I believe that some stuff needs to be re shot. The reason for this is because some of the camera angles aren’t shot at the right angle to show mies en scene in the shot. Also the lighting sometimes makes the shot look very pixelated.
Initial edit structure:
I plan to structure the video through mixing narrative with lip sync. When there is a change of setting I will add in a lip sync in-between the narrative clips to separate up the video. My initial idea is to have him wake up in the middle of no where then blink and he is in his bathroom this sets for the rest of the music video as the audience see straight away that the character isn’t stable.
